    UPSC Exam Syllabus:

UPSC exam is divided in three parts:

    – Prelim

    – Mains

    – Interview

Syllabus and exam preparation technique for all three levels are different. Here is the broad view of syllabus for UPSC exam.

    Prelims:

    Paper I – General Studies

    Paper II – Aptitude Skills

    Mains Exam:

    Paper I: Essay

Paper II: General Studies – I

Paper III: General Studies – II

    Paper-IV: General Studies- III

    Paper-V: General Studies- IV

    Paper-VI: Optional Subject – Paper 1

Paper-VII: Optional Subject – Paper II

    Interview:

Also known as PI or personal interview, it all depends on your presentation skills. This is the syllabus for UPSC exam. As far as study material is concerned, there are a number of books different teachers and aspirants will suggest. The best option is to enroll at a coaching center like Vajiram and Ravi to get expert assistance at each step. Teachers there provide updated syllabus, test papers, handmade notes and strategies to perform well in the exam.

As such there is not much difference between preparation strategy for IAS Prelims and Mains exam. The only difference is answer writing techniques as Mains exam is more about essay type answers where you need to present your ideas and thoughts wisely to impress the person checking your paper. Time- management, dedication, test-series and practice remain the integral part of IAS mains exam preparation.

As far as books, syllabus and test series are concerned, it is better to take admission in a coaching center that offers right guidance. One of my friends attended Vajiram and Ravi for IAS Mains Exam preparation and liked their strategies a lot. The faculty at the institute offers updated syllabus books; conduct mock test and advice students with the tips to perform well in the exam. Further, they also offer handmade notes to help you utilize your time on studying other important books.

Just make sure that you practice answer writing as much as you can to write the best answer in limited time. Make your answers impressive with bullet points, headings, sub-headings and graphs. Try to explain more in limited words and keep your points in easy to understand language.

Wish you all the best in advance!

Writing impressive essay type answers is one of the necessary skills to score well in UPSC exams. No matter how much knowledge you have, if you are not able to present your thoughts in attention grabbing way, you will not be able to clear the exam. Some of the tips to write essay type answers effectively are:

    1. Compile all the important points before writing the answer

    2. Decide specific time for each answer to ensure that you don’t end up leaving other questions

    3. Evaluate the question and write down the explanation accordingly

    4. Don’t waste time on writing personal opinions in the answer

    5. Interlink the whole answer to make it clear for the examiner to understand what you want to say

And last but not the least, practice as much as you can. You can also read the blog(How to Master the Art of Essay Writing in UPSC Examination?) to get detailed idea on effective essay writing skills in UPSC exams.

The first thing should be to prepare a time table as per the availability of time with you. The time-table should not be just to enhance the beauty of your study table. You should follow it strictly and devote decided time to each subject.

To clear UPSC exams, you cannot afford to ignore any area. The Prelims exam is divided in two parts: General Knowledge and Aptitude.

Both the parts are of 200 marks, but aptitude is of less importance. It is just a qualifying exam, but still doesn’t mean that you ignore it or give it less time. Every subject has equal importance and needs same dedication to perform well in the exam.

But before anything else, you need to understand the exam pattern, importance of each subject and strategies to prepare well for them.

You can read the blog to know everything about UPSC exam preparation: 6 Important Things To Know Before Initiating UPSC Exam Preparation

Hope the blog helps you give your exam preparation a right direction for maximum learning. I would suggest that you should not just limit your preparation to the Prelim exams as many subjects and topics covered during Prelims are also helpful in Mains exam. So prepare for both the levels simultaneously.

To start preparation of UPSC Prelim exam, you should first equip yourself with the examination pattern. Once you know the pattern and weightage of different subjects, you will be able to make clear strategies for each subject.

UPSC Prelim exam is divided in two parts:

    Part I – General Studies

    Part II – Aptitude

For part one you can read newspapers, magazines and other books based on current affairs.

For Part II that is aptitude, you need to focus on different parts due to its dynamic nature. It includes mathematics, reasoning, interpersonal skills and analytical ability that demands for strong mental ability. Though the aptitude test is of only qualifying nature, you still need to score 33% marks to qualify in the exam.

As far as books for aptitude exam preparation are concerned, I would suggest you take help of teachers. If you keep asking different people, everyone will recommend different book and you will get confused.

So, better ask the teachers at coaching institutes to get the best suggestions. I went through the same problem when started UPSC exam preparation. But thankfully I got support of my teachers at Vajiram and Ravi to make the things easier for me and gain maximum from my time spent on exam preparation.

Practice is essential to develop writing skills. To build up concentration, start meditation. It will not only help you get relief from the exam stress but will also help you stay more focused on the topic.

As far as writing skills are concerned, practicing old exam papers and test series is the best option. Institutes like Vajiram and Ravi provide well-researched test series to help students work on their exam taking skills.

While taking mock exams count your time and try to complete every answer in pre-decided time period. The clock running in your mind won't let you divert from the topic and will help you complete the answer quickly.

You can also take help of your teachers at the IAS exam preparation coaching center. They are experts and know how to handle different situations. They will definitely tell you techniques to write answers with more focused approach.

The right approach to start preparation of GS paper is to read newspapers, listen to news channels and read as many GS books as you can. By saying this, I don’t mean that you should cram every GS book available in the market. As it is your 1st time, you might not have idea of right books. So to save your time and efforts, take help of experienced faculty at some good coaching center. They not just provide the list of books but also give you handmade notes with all the important points. If you are thinking about a coaching center, Vajiram and Ravi is the best option in Delhi. They provide complete support to the aspirants from the day one and ensure that you perform well in the exam even in your first attempt.

There are numerous things that make a coaching center for IAS exam preparation great, like success rate, quality of syllabus, the qualification and experience of the teachers, the infrastructure, test series, notes and classes. Based on all these factors, I would say Vajiram and Ravi is one of the best Civil Services exam preparation coaching institutes in Delhi. Calling a certain coaching center best is not a right way to answer your question for something that is great for me might not be equally appealing for you. For instance, you can like a coaching center that has good teachers but just average infrastructure, while for some other student both the qualification of the teacher and the quality of infrastructure might be equally important.

Since you want to get a name, I would say it is Vajiram and Ravi. This is a perfect coaching center for UPSC and IAS exam preparation. They offer well-researched study material, regular classes and test series.

Though you might find their fee that is around Rs. 1lakh a bit high, but when you compare it with the facilities provided, you will find it completely justified.

IAS exam preparation is not about studying 4-5 syllabus books. The whole IAS exam preparation that is divided in three parts: Prelims, Mains and Personal Interviews need thorough study. Besides reading the syllabus books, you also need to stay updated with the happenings around you. IAS exam preparation includes NCERT books, subject books, GS books and optional subject books.

If you ask online, everyone will suggest you different book as per their convenience. Following every suggestion might confuse you and can affect your preparation. So the right idea to study for IAS is to take help of experts at reputed coaching centers like Vajiram and Ravi. The teachers at the IAS coaching institute guide you at every step like book reading techniques, note making techniques, time management, mock exams and GD.

Initially, you might start with self-study, but to gain more insights about the exam and the right preparation strategies, you must join some coaching center.

    Hello friends,

I took IAS exam preparation coaching from Vajiram and Ravi. I liked their study material, test series, mock tests and the experienced teachers. The best thing I liked at Vajiram and Ravi is the personal support of the teachers. The institute offers separate GD sessions for discussion and preparation of current affairs.

They also provide postal study material to the students who don’t want to attend coaching. In short, I liked everything from the infrastructure to the teaching techniques and study material at Vajiram.
